How to Change Ink in an HP Printer
It’s fairly easy to change your HP printer ink, but some of the steps may differ depending on the type of printer you have and the ink required. Generally speaking, the process looks something like this:
Turn on the printer and add copy paper, so you can complete the required print alignment tests after installation.
Lift up the ink cartridge access door — it should click into place as the ink carriage moves to the middle of the printer.
After the carriage stops moving, lift the ink cartridge slot lid, push back the lid and remove the spent cartridge.
Remove the protective plastic strip from the new ink cartridge, and insert the cartridge into the carriage.
You’ll then close the access door and wait for the printer to automatically recalibrate and print an alignment page. Put the alignment page face down on the printer’s scanner and touch the “OK” button to complete installation and alignment.
How to Check Ink Levels on HP Printer
If you're not sure whether you need new ink for your HP printer, your device should tell you. HP printers automatically keep track of ink usage. Just go to the Settings panel (click through Setup and Menu to get there) and find the menu item labeled "Ink Levels." You can then use the directional keys on your printer’s control panel to check the current ink level.
It’s easy to forget to check up on your ink levels, and sometimes, the printer’s “Low Ink” alert comes right in the middle of a big project. Stocking up on extra cartridges helps ensure you can create everything from address labels to book reports without skipping a beat.
How to Install Ink Cartridge in HP Printer

Double-check the size and style of your cartridge before buying to avoid accidentally mismatches or bringing home a cartridge that won’t fit.
Between removing the old cartridge and installing the new one, look at the cartridge slot and wipe out any dirt or debris.
Once you remove the protective strip from your ink cartridge, avoid touching the gold contact points, as that could damage the connection.
