Aspercreme

Aspercreme contains an analgesic medication called trolamine salicylate, which is similar to aspirin, as both medicines are part of the family known as salicylates. However, unlike aspirin, Aspercreme products aren't ingested, so they're significantly less likely to cause side effects, such as blood thinning or heartburn.

Ask your doctor before using Aspercreme products if you're sensitive to aspirin. Most people can use pain-relief creams containing similar ingredients without issue, but it may be best to avoid these products entirely if you have an allergy.

Aspercreme with lidocaine contains an added anesthetic that may help improve pain relief. While the product has many uses, one of the most common includes helping to alleviate pain from muscle sprains and mild arthritis. Because it helps numb the nerves temporarily, lidocaine may offer more effective relief of some painful skin conditions and underlying tissue caused by nerve pain.

The main advantage of topical products, such as Aspercreme, is their ability to concentrate the effects of the painkiller exactly where you need them. If pain is particularly severe, you may also be able to use these products with oral analgesics, such as acetaminophen, to help provide an additional layer of relief. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first to ensure the combination is okay.

Aspercreme should only be used on intact skin, free of irritation or surface injury. Apply a thin layer to the treatment area, then massage the product until it absorbs fully and your skin feels relatively dry. Wash your hands with soap and water afterward.

Aspercreme sprays work slightly differently than creams, as these products are self-drying. Simply spray a light layer of the medication onto the affected area, and allow it to air-dry.

Aspercreme can help reduce pain for about 6-8 hours, depending on the formulation, and it's okay to reapply most products several times a day to maintain the effect as needed. Always read the packaging directions thoroughly, as the reapplication time can vary.
