Toothbrushes for Toddlers

Getting your little one to sit still for an oral care routine can be a little easier with toothbrushes for toddlers. Smaller than adult toothbrushes, these toddler oral care tools make it easier to brush your young child's teeth before they can do it themselves. Having the right tools makes the task more enjoyable and helps your kids learn lifelong oral care skills.

When Should Kids Start Brushing Their Teeth?

Good oral hygiene starts from birth, even before your child starts teething. Wiping your baby's gums with a soft, damp cloth helps keep them clean. Once a tooth appears, it's time to buy toothbrushes for toddlers. These smaller toothbrushes are easier to use for small baby teeth. You can use a manual or power toothbrush for toddlers, depending on what they prefer. Your little one will likely need help with brushing their teeth until they're 6 or older. Each child develops their motor skills and learns how to brush thoroughly at their own pace.

What Should You Look for in Toothbrushes for Toddlers?

Toothbrushes for toddlers are typically much smaller than the adult toothbrushes you use. The smaller heads fit into your toddler's smaller mouth better, so you can reach all areas well. Shorter, wider handles are easier for young kids to hold and manipulate themselves. Toddlers should use toothbrushes with soft bristles that are gentle on their gums and teeth. Kids' oral hygiene tools, including toddler toothbrushes, often use bright colors and images of characters. Choose your child's favorite color or theme to make teeth brushing more engaging.

How to Use Toothbrushes for Toddlers

Kids' oral hygiene can take some creativity with young kids, who can sometimes be highly active or resistant to brushing. If your little one doesn't like to brush their teeth, let them choose their own fun toothbrushes for toddlers to make the process more exciting. Use these tips to brush properly:

  • Put a smear of kids' fluoride toothpaste on toothbrushes for 2-year-olds and a pea-sized amount for those ages 3 and older.

  • Use small circular or back-and-forth brush motions to clean their teeth, tongue and inner cheeks and the roof of their mouth.

  • Brush for about 2 minutes. Singing or playing a song that lasts about that long can help make brushing more enjoyable.

  • Follow up with kids' floss to clean between your toddler's teeth.

Independent toddlers often want to handle the brushing themselves. Letting them hold the toothbrush is good practice and can make the process more engaging. When they're done, announce that it's your turn to brush to ensure you get all of their teeth brushed well.
