Super Tampons

Super tampons offer extra absorbency for days when your period is heavier. They provide a convenient way to stay dry during your period. Find the right heavy-flow tampons to handle your menstrual cycle at CVS.

What Is The Biggest Tampon Size?

When looking for the right tampon to help during your period, you will quickly find that there are several sizes available for different output levels. As everyone with periods knows, at different points of a menstrual cycle there are different levels of absorbency needed. Choosing the best tampon size is critical to absorbing all output and avoiding any potential embarrassment. Here is an explanation of tampon sizes available:

  • Light: The smallest size, for the lowest flow days, absorbs under 6 g of output

  • Regular: Light to medium flow days, for 6-9 g of output

  • Super: Medium flow days, for 9-12 g of output

  • Super-Plus: Medium to heavy flow days, for 12-15 g of output

  • Ultra: The biggest size, for the heaviest flow days, for more than 15 g of output

Are Super Tampons Safe?

Tampons of all absorbency levels can be used safely if you change them frequently. Some people leave super tampons in longer than they would light or regular tampons since they have a higher absorbency and don't fill up as quickly. Frequent changes, even if the tampon isn't full, make it safer to use super tampons. While organic super tampons tend to be better for the environment and have fewer chemicals in them, they can still cause TSS and need to be changed frequently. You can also make super tampons safer to use by using them as directed and washing your hands before and after you insert them.

How Big Are Super Tampons?

Super tampons are designed to hold between 9 to 12 grams of menstrual fluid. They are typically used within the first couple of days of your period, when menstrual flow is at its heaviest. They absorb more fluid than a light or a regular tampon.

How Long Do Super Tampons Last?

The length of time a super tampon lasts depends largely on your flow. Super tampons typically hold about 12 milliliters of fluid, so the rate of your flow determines how quickly the tampon reaches its maximum capacity. If you have abnormally heavy periods, you might have to change the tampon every hour or two. For lighter periods, you might be able to wear them much longer.

Even if the tampon isn't full, never wear the same one for more than 8 hours. You should generally change it every 4 to 8 hours or sooner if it becomes saturated faster. Changing these feminine care products frequently reduces your risk of developing toxic shock syndrome.

How Many Super Tampons per Day Are Normal?

Most people use about three to six tampons per day, regardless of the absorbency, if the absorbency of the tampon is ideal for their flow. If you have a heavier flow, you might need to change your super tampons more often, or you can move up to super plus tampons for greater absorbency, so you don't have to change them as often. If you change your super tampons after several hours, and they're still mostly white or are difficult to remove because they're still dry, you might need to move down to a regular or light tampon. Having a variety of tampon sizes on hand makes it easy to adjust as your flow changes throughout your period.
