Anti Itch Cream for Children

Itchiness caused by a skin condition or an allergy is uncomfortable for kids, which is why an anti-itch cream for children can be a helpful addition to your first aid kit. These medicines may come in the form of an ointment, lotion or gel.

What Is Anti-Itch Cream for Children?

Anti-itch cream for kids is a topical medicine that helps relieve temporary itchiness and dry skin. Itchy skin may be caused by eczema, bites, rashes or allergies. Several types of anti-itch cream are available, containing various ingredients to help soothe itching. Cortizone creams, such as CeraVe anti-itch cream, contain hydrocortisone, a mild steroid that works similarly to the body’s natural hormones and helps to reduce inflammation. Topical analgesics, such as Benadryl gel, use an active painkiller to help reduce the discomfort associated with irritation. Antifungal creams contain substances such as clotrimazole that support the treatment of ringworm. Herbal alternative creams are also available that contain soothing ingredients, such as honey and aloe vera. You may apply creams with your fingers, an applicator or a cotton ball.

What Is the Safest Anti-Itch Cream for Children?

Creams that claim they're suitable for children can be the safest to use on kids' itchy skin. For safety, it’s best to consult your child’s pediatrician if you’re not sure which is the best children's anti-itch cream. Nonsteroidal anti-itch creams are often preferred to use on kids with red or irritated skin. Cortizone cream can work well to help reduce inflammation and itching, but it may not be as effective on itchiness caused by an infection, and it may reduce the body’s ability to fight off the infection.

How Long Does It Take for Kids' Anti-Itch Cream to Work?

When applied, anti-itch cream can work quickly, and the effect may last from an hour to several hours. To maximize the soothing effect of an anti-itch cream, make sure your child doesn’t rub, pick or scratch the irritated area as doing so may make itching worse or might even leave scarring. Check the label for usage instructions.
