Motion Sickness Medicine for Smooth Travel

Stay balanced and comfortable during your travels with effective motion sickness medicine from CVS Pharmacy. Our range of reliable products includes trusted brands, such as Dramamine, Emetrol and Nauzene, to help provide long-lasting relief during your next vacation or business trip.

How Does Motion Sickness Medicine Work?

Most tablets for motion sickness, such as Gravol, contain antihistamines like dimenhydrinate or meclizine. While you may be more familiar with histamine as the chemical that can cause itchiness and other allergy symptoms, it's also involved in nausea. Blocking the effects of histamine with motion sickness medication tends to work well for mild or even more severe symptoms, while causing few side effects for most people.

Nondrowsy motion sickness medicines typically feature ginger, which is also effective for many people but doesn't leave you feeling tired and may have an even lower risk of side effects. Ginger is believed to help ease nausea and motion sickness by reducing the effects of serotonin in certain areas of your nervous system where the neurotransmitter can cause vertigo or queasiness, similar to how the prescription anti-nausea drug ondansetron works.

Does Motion Sickness Medicine Make You Sleepy?

Motion sickness medicines can make you feel sleepy for several hours after dosing, so it's essential to avoid driving or operating machinery if affected. You also shouldn't drink alcohol or take motion sickness pills with other medications that cause drowsiness.

The sedation from anti-nausea medicines is usually mild, so most people can still function properly and enjoy all the experiences possible through travel while avoiding symptoms, such as nausea. However, some people are sensitive to drowsiness. It may help to try a different active ingredient or switch to a nonsedating formulation, such as Dramamine Non-Drowsy if you're struggling with tiredness.

Can You Take Motion Sickness Medicine While Pregnant?

Some active ingredients featured in motion sickness medicines are also used for morning sickness and can be okay to take during pregnancy. However, don't take any medications without discussing them with your doctor first. Your doctor can recommend effective products suitable for your stage of pregnancy and individual needs, helping ensure your baby is born healthy.
