Cough Medicine for Babies

If your infant isn't feeling well, you might find yourself in search of cough medicine for babies. While helping your child feel better is your top priority, keep in mind that babies under a certain age are typically too young to use traditional cough and cold remedies. Thankfully, when your baby is coughing, CVS has options available that can help them feel better fast.

How to Stop an Infant From Coughing

Treating a coughing infant isn't as simple as treating coughs in older children and adults. While medications such as Infants' Tylenol might help to ease any associated fever or pain, cough and cold medicine for babies isn't available without a doctor's prescription. That said, there are things you can do that may help relieve your child's cough, including:

  • Adding a humidifier to their bedroom

  • Ensuring they stay hydrated by offering a bottle, breastmilk or small amounts of water

  • Using nasal suction to prevent or reduce postnasal drip if they're congested

What Can You Give a 3-Month-Old for Cough?

At 3 months old, there aren't many options when it comes to cough medicine for babies. However, you can offer your infant other things to keep their cough under control and help them feel a bit better.

In addition to using the methods listed above to help your infant, using a drug-free saline spray, such as Little Remedies Saline Spray/Drops may help clear mucus from your baby's nasal passages and throat, which can help reduce coughing. Use saline prior to aspirating the nasal passages utilizing a suction tool or the fridababy NoseFrida Snotsucker

Is There Cough Medicine for Infants?

Cough medicines for infants, including herbal cough medicine for babies, do exist, but it's best to offer these solutions under the advice of your child's physician or pediatrician. In fact, most require a prescription from your doctor to ensure your baby receives a dosage that's safe for their body weight.

Infant coughs that can't be managed within a few days at home should be investigated by a qualified health care provider. If your infant has a cough that doesn't get better by offering fluids and using saline, book an appointment with your family physician, or schedule a visit with MinuteClinic, either virtually or in person, at a CVS location near you.
