Abreva Cold Sore Medicine

When you feel the first tingle or notice the signs of a cold sore appearing, it’s time to reach for Abreva cold sore medicine. CVS’ Abreva treatments contain active ingredients that get to work fast, shortening healing times and helping to clear up the cold sore infection in just a few days.

What Is in Abreva Cold Sore Cream?

Abreva cold sore cream is an FDA-approved over-the-counter treatment designed to be used at the first sign of a cold sore. This odorless and tasteless white cream becomes transparent when it’s dry, so it's unnoticeable when applied to the skin.

It works by targeting the cold sore virus, getting deep under the skin and blocking the virus from infecting surrounding cells, helping to prevent it from spreading. At the same time, Abreva cold sore medicine helps reduce pain, tingling, itching and burning sensations that accompany a cold sore.

How to Use Abreva Cold Sore Medicine

Abreva cold sore treatment is a topical-use medicine that’s applied directly onto the cold sore and the surrounding area. Once the cream has dried, you can use and apply other products on top of it, such as lip balm or lipstick, which can help cover and conceal your cold sore. In most cases, Abreva cold sore cream can be used up to five times a day until the cold sore is completely healed, but refer to the instructions on the package before use.

How Long Do Cold Sores Last With Abreva?

When using Abreva cream at the first tingle, a cold sore could be a thing of the past in just 2.5 days. However, healing times vary from person to person and, depending on the severity of the infection, it may take up to 10 days for the cold sore to fully disappear.

If the cold sore worsens or doesn’t heal within 10 days, speak to your doctor, pharmacist or another medical professional.

Can You Put Too Much Abreva on a Cold Sore?

If you’ve followed the directions on the packaging, you shouldn’t be using too much Abreva cold sore medicine, especially when using the pump dispenser, which dispenses the correct amount of cream each time. The recommended dosage is designed for safe treatment to help your cold sore to heal, so you get back your confident smile as quickly as possible.
