Baby Chest Rub

When your baby is fussy, whether it’s due to a cold or an allergy, a baby chest rub may help to soothe them and provide some relief from coughing and congestion.

Is Baby Chest Rub Safe?

Baby chest rubs have been specially formulated with babies in mind, but they shouldn’t be used on infants younger than 2 to 3 months, depending on the product you choose. Refer to the instructions on the package to verify the minimum age recommendations.

Before applying the product to your baby’s skin, read all the instructions and warnings on the package. Additionally, keep the following in mind:

  • Always ensure the area where you've applied the rub is covered by clothing, so the baby can’t touch it and transfer some to their mouth or eyes.

  • Keep the product away from your baby’s face, and don’t be tempted to apply any to the insides of the nostrils or near the mouth.

  • Don’t apply baby chest rub to broken skin.

Stop using the product and consult your doctor if you notice any redness or irritation in the area where you applied the rub.

When to Use Baby Chest Rub

Baby chest rub may be used for babies who cough and are congested, whether it’s the result of a common cold, the flu, allergies or environmental factors, such as smoke or cold weather.

While a baby chest rub doesn't treat the underlying condition, such as the cold, it may alleviate symptoms and soothe your baby by helping them relax, suppressing their urge to cough and providing relief from stuffiness and congestion.

For additional benefits, a cool-mist humidifier can be used to add moisture to the air. This may further help loosen congestion and also address the side effects of breathing through an open mouth, such as mouth dryness and a sore throat.

Does Baby Chest Rub Expire?

Even the best baby chest rubs have an expiration date, which you’ll find stamped on the products. Never use any product past this date, as it may lose its efficiency or be harmful to the user. Expiration dates help to protect you and your family.
