Canned Tuna

Keeping canned tuna on hand is an easy way to get your protein in a quick meal. CVS offers several tuna options, from individual cans to lunch packs that make an on-the-go meal.

How Much Protein Is in Canned Tuna?

Canned tuna is a high-protein food option, but the protein content of canned tuna may depend on which product you choose. Canned tuna nutrition can vary slightly based on the tuna variety. Common options include chunk light canned tuna and albacore tuna. Some tuna products contain other ingredients that can affect the nutritional content. Serving sizes also vary from one product to the next, which can affect how much protein you get per serving and in the entire container.

To determine how much protein you're getting in your tuna, read the nutritional label for the specific product you're considering. Look at the serving size to determine if the protein amount shown is for the full can or only a portion. Lunch kits are often single servings, while larger cans might have multiple servings.

Is Canned Tuna Cooked?

Canned tuna always comes cooked, which makes it a convenient pantry staple. You can eat it right out of the package without heating or cooking it. Many people use canned tuna to make homemade tuna salad. You can also use it in cooked recipes, such as tuna noodle casserole. Plus, it works as an emergency ration option in case your power goes out and you can't cook anything.

How Long Does Canned Tuna Last?

Before it's opened, canned tuna can last years in your pantry. It should have an expiration date printed on the can, and the quality of the tuna may decrease after that date. However, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says most shelf-stable foods last for years as long as the can doesn't have rust, dents or other damage. If you have any concerns about older tuna, toss it and replace it with new products.

Once you open the can, store any remaining tuna in the refrigerator. Transfer the tuna to a different container that seals well. The leftover tuna should stay fresh for 1-2 days with refrigeration when stored in a sealed container.
